Is TatvaBooks a good alternative to Vyapar?
Yes — if you’ve outgrown billing on a single device and want cloud access, multi-user books, GSTR-2B reconciliation and payroll, run by Indian CAs. Vyapar still wins on offline-first counter billing and raw speed at the till. The switch trades that for cloud, deeper accounting and India-first compliance.
| Dimension | TatvaBooks | Vyapar |
|---|---|---|
| Platform & access | Cloud-native — open the same books from any browser, any device | Windows desktop + Android app; data lives on the device |
| Offline use | Needs an internet connection (cloud) | Works offline — a genuine strength for counter billing |
| Multi-user / real-time | Concurrent users on any device, role-based access | Primarily single-device; sync across devices via backup |
| Double-entry & financial statements | Full double-entry on a Schedule III chart — Trial Balance, P&L, Balance Sheet | Billing + inventory with business reports; lighter on formal Schedule III books |
| GSTR-2B reconciliation | Built into the purchase flow — match 2B, resolve ITC mismatches before filing | GST invoicing and GSTR-1 / 3B reports; 2B reconciliation isn't the focus |
| e-Invoice / e-Way bill | e-Invoice prepared (IRN + QR), sandbox-tested; live NIC filing on roadmap | e-Invoice / e-Way bill generation available on paid plans |
| Payroll (PF / ESI / PT / TDS) | Built in — PF, ESI, PT, TDS and full-and-final (Growth plan) | No built-in payroll today |
| Audit trail | Immutable edit-log on every voucher (Companies Rules-aligned) | Device-based records; lighter audit-trail coverage |
| Data residency & backup | India-resident cloud (AWS Mumbai), encrypted at rest, daily backups | On your device — you manage backups (local / Google Drive) |
| Pricing model | Solo (free) · Business ₹599/mo · Growth ₹1,099/mo · Practice ₹1,999/mo | Free Android tier; paid annual licence for desktop / premium |
| Data migration | Parties and items via Excel / CSV; openings set with our help | Source system — export parties and items to Excel; history stays in Vyapar |
Honest caveats: Vyapar is fast, cheap and works offline, and for a small shop that mainly bills at a counter that may be all you need. TatvaBooks needs an internet connection, and our e-invoice is prepared rather than filed live to NIC today. We migrate parties and items, not your full transaction history.
Why teams move from Vyapar
Vyapar is a great first step out of a notebook or a spreadsheet. The reasons teams come to us are almost always about outgrowing the single device:
- More than one person needs the books.A partner, an accountant and your CA all wanting access at once doesn’t fit a device-based tool.
- Backups shouldn’t depend on remembering. A lost or corrupted phone/PC takes the books with it unless a backup was made. Cloud handles that for you.
- Real GST workings. GSTR-2B reconciliation and ITC tracking, place-of-supply validation and a Schedule III chart of accounts your CA can file from.
- Payroll in the same place. PF, ESI, PT and TDS handled with the rest of your books.
What Vyapar does well — let’s be fair
- Offline-first.It keeps billing when the internet doesn’t — and in much of India that still matters.
- Speed at the counter. Vyapar is built to raise a bill in seconds, which high-volume shops rely on.
- Low cost. A free Android tier and an inexpensive annual licence make it very accessible.
If those are the core of how you run, the right answer might be to keep Vyapar for counter billing and move accounting, GST and payroll to TatvaBooks. We’ll say so on the kickoff call.
What comes over today
- Parties — customers and suppliers, with GSTINs and addresses, from the Vyapar Excel export.
- Items — your product/service list, set onto a Schedule III chart of accounts.
- Opening balances and stock — set as on your cut-over date, with our help, and reconciled before you sign off.
- A clean parallel run — Vyapar stays read-only for its history while new transactions go into TatvaBooks.
Automated migration of historical transactions isn’t part of this — your history stays safe in Vyapar during the parallel run, which is the honest, low-risk way to switch.
The onboarding process
- Day 0 — Kickoff. A 20–30-minute call. How you use Vyapar today, what to bring over, and the cut-over date.
- Day 1 — Export masters. Export your parties and items from Vyapar to Excel and upload them. We map them to the Schedule III chart of accounts.
- Day 1 — Opening balances. We help you set opening balances and stock as on the cut-over date. You sign off on the numbers.
- Day 1 onward — Parallel run. Vyapar stays read-only for its history; daily work shifts to TatvaBooks; you reconcile at month-end.
- First cycle — Go-live. A walkthrough with your team, then your first GST cycle with us on WhatsApp.
What we don’t yet do
- Offline counter billing.TatvaBooks is cloud and needs a connection — there’s no offline POS mode.
- Barcode / cash-drawer POS hardware. Not part of the product today.
- Live e-invoice filing to NIC. We prepare the IRN and QR (sandbox-tested); live filing is on the near-term roadmap.
