The best Tally alternatives in India — honestly compared.
Tally has run Indian books for three decades and earned it. But if you want cloud access, GSTR-2B reconciliation or books your whole team can open at once, here are the real alternatives in 2026 — and who each one actually suits.

When does a Tally alternative make sense?
Tally is excellent, and this page isn’t here to talk you out of it. But the cracks show the moment your business looks a little different from a single-desk proprietorship: two people can’t edit the same company without a multi-user licence and a LAN, the USB dongle becomes a single point of failure, GSTR-1 is still a manual export-and-upload, and backups fall on you. If any of those sting, it’s worth seeing what else exists.
Below is the honest landscape. There is no single “best Tally alternative” — there is the one that fits how you work.
| Alternative | Best for | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| TatvaBooks | SMBs and CAs who want cloud access, GSTR-2B reconciliation and built-in payroll — built for India, by Indian CAs. | e-Invoice is prepared (IRN + QR) but not yet filed live to the NIC portal; single-level BOM only; currently in private beta. |
| Zoho Books | Businesses wanting a mature, polished cloud product with multi-currency, recurring billing and a large app ecosystem. | Global product with India as one of many markets; paid once you cross the free-tier turnover cap. |
| Vyapar | Small retailers and traders who want fast GST billing and stock on a Windows PC or Android phone — offline. | Device-based rather than true multi-user cloud; billing- and inventory-led, lighter on full double-entry; no built-in payroll. |
| Busy | Traders and distributors who want Tally-style desktop accounting with strong inventory and a familiar feel. | Desktop-first and Windows-led, like Tally — the cloud experience is an add-on rather than the core. |
| Marg ERP | Pharma, retail and distribution businesses that need industry-specific billing and deep stock control. | Desktop-first; strongest inside its verticals rather than as a general-purpose cloud ledger. |
| Stay on Tally | Deep multi-level manufacturing, godown / batch / serial stock, offline-first sites, and power users who punch vouchers by keyboard. | Single-user lock-in, the USB dongle, manual GSTR-1 export and backup hygiene all stay on you. |
Is there a free Tally alternative?
This is the most-searched question, so let’s answer it straight. TatvaBooks Solo is free forever — ₹0, for solopreneurs up to ₹25 lakh turnover: one user, one GSTIN, unlimited GST-correct invoices, credit/debit notes and GSTR-2B reconciliation. Vyapar has a free Android tier for basic billing. Zoho Books has a free plan up to a turnover cap.
The honest caveat on anything “free like Tally”: the catch is usually a turnover cap, a single user, or device-bound data. TatvaBooks Solo is genuinely free at the solo end — you upgrade only when you need multi-user access, payroll or inventory. See our free accounting software page for the full picture.
Weighing TatvaBooks against Tally specifically?
The short version: TatvaBooks is ahead on cloud access, GSTR-2B reconciliation and built-in payroll; Tally is ahead on offline use and deep multi-level manufacturing. We keep the full, line-by-line side-by-side — cloud vs dongle, e-invoice, pricing and data migration — on the Migrate from Tallypage, so we’re not repeating it here. Honest caveat either way: TatvaBooks prepares e-invoices but doesn’t yet file them live to NIC, and we migrate masters via CSV rather than your full history.
When TatvaBooks is the right alternative
- You want to open the same books from the office, home and your CA’s desk — at the same time.
- GSTR-2B reconciliation and ITC tracking inside the purchase flow matter to your month-end.
- You’d rather pay a small monthly subscription than carry a dongle and manage your own backups.
- You want payroll (PF, ESI, PT, TDS) and accounting in one place, built around Indian compliance.
When to keep Tally
We’d rather you stay on Tally than switch and regret it. Keep it if:
- You run deep multi-level manufacturing with job-work, or need godown / batch / serial-wise stock — Tally goes deeper than our single-level BOM.
- You work offline-firstand the internet can’t be relied on.
- Your team are power users who punch vouchers by keyboard faster than any cloud app redraws.
In those cases, many teams move accounting and GST to TatvaBooks and keep Tally for the workflow it owns. We’ll say so on the call.
